> **Season 3 — October 2026 (Autumn / Halloween Edition)** · [Interactive Web View](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/03?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day03) · [Raw Markdown](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/03.md?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day03)

**Summary:** Move from single-agent prototypes to hardened, production multi-agent architectures on Google Cloud using Gemini Enterprise

Securing multi-agent workflows requires a robust defense-in-depth approach. We ground theory in practice by architecting a Multi-Agent Warranty Claims System (based on a paper published at Google Next 2026).

**How It Works**

This reference architecture secures autonomous enterprise agents across four fundamental security boundaries:

- ** 1. Separation of Duties (Privilege Compartmentalization)**
** 1.1 The Concept**: Instead of using one unconstrained, all-powerful "God Agent" to handle everything, we partition task execution among highly specialized, bounded agent personas. Even if one Agent is tricked by malicious context, the attacker cannot escalate privileges because the compromised agent has no lateral access to other systems.
** 1.2 The Warranty Claims System**:
** 1.2.1 Case Manager Agent**: Serves as the orchestrator. It receives sanitized customer requests and coordinates the workflow, but has no direct connection to the database or external shipping APIs.
** 1.2.2 Data Vault Agent**: An isolated retriever with exclusive, read-only permissions to query internal entitlement databases. It cannot communicate directly with users.
** 1.2.3 Logistics Liaison Agent**: Walled off on its own Cloud Run instance, this executor possesses tools to call shipping APIs, but is entirely blind to customer and entitlement databases.
** 1.3 Key Security Outcome**: The blast radius of a prompt injection attack is confined to a single, low-privilege boundary.

- ** 2. Trust and Verify (Cryptographic Machine Identity)**
** 2.1 The Concept**: Traditional systems rely on fragile static passwords or over-privileged service account keys. Instead, all communications between agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers must be explicitly authorized, cryptographically attested, and validated at every hop.
** 2.2 The Warranty Claims System**:
** 2.2.1 Agent Identity**: Every agent runtime is provisioned with a native GCP Agent Identity backed by short-lived, mTLS-attested SPIFFE certificates.
** 2.2.2 Agent Gateway (Policy Enforcement Point)**: Serves as our single security front door. It intercepts all incoming and lateral traffic to enforce security policies globally. It runs inline **Model Armor** checks to inspect and sanitize incoming prompts, scrubbing jailbreaks, neutralizing prompt injections, and masking PII before the text is allowed to hit our model's context window. All lateral agent-to-agent (A2A) communications routes through it, which uses Identity-Aware Proxy (IAP) to verify machine identities and enforce strict authorization policies on every payload.
** 2.2.3 Agent Registry**: Serves as the central directory, maintaining a secure roster of authorized agents and verified MCP servers.
** 2.3 Key Security Outcome**: Unauthorized lateral movement is blocked instantly. Even if a bad actor intercepts a message payload, they cannot execute tools because they lack an attested SPIFFE identity certificate.

- ** 3. Private Network Connections (Network Perimeter Isolation)**
** 3.1 The Concept**: To protect high-value databases and backend code, we must keep all communications off the public internet. This is achieved by creating an isolated, trusted network perimeter.
** 3.2 The Warranty Claims System**:
** 3.2.1 Private Service Connect (PSC)**: Serverless workloads (like Cloud Run agents) connect to VPC data backends privately using PSC.
** 3.2.2 VPC Service Controls (VPC-SC)**: Encloses all internal services and database layers inside a macro-perimeter that blocks data egress, preventing a compromised agent from copying data to an external, unauthorized GCP project.
**3.3 Key Security Outcome**: The entire multi-agent system resides inside a secure network perimeter, protecting both inbound and outbound traffic from public exposure and external data exfiltration.
