# 🔒 Day 11: Sensitive Data Protection: Redact PII from Agent Prompts

> **Season 3 — October 2026 (Autumn / Halloween Edition)** · [Interactive Web View](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/11?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day11) · [Raw Markdown](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/11.md?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day11)

**Summary:** Automatically replace sensitive user identifiers with safe placeholders before they enter the model's context window, or logs.

## 🧭 Community Perspective & Companion Deep Dive

- **[Featured Perspective: Google ADK Guardrail Callbacks & Harness (@kmeanskaran)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QdbMFkPh74)** by **Karan Shingde** (@kmeanskaran · 19:24) — See how application-layer ADK guardrail callbacks complement Model Armor DLP masking to strip PII, API keys, and sensitive customer records before they ever reach the model or logs (plus Karan's upcoming Oct 5, 2026 Google Cloud release).

**Day 11 of Google's Advent of Agents — Season 3**

When employees or customers interact with an enterprise analytics agent, they often paste personal identifiers like email addresses, phone numbers, or Social Security numbers directly into the prompt. Without pre-execution scrubbing, that sensitive PII flows straight into the model's context window, downstream SQL queries, and plain-text observability logs.

**How It Works**

You can redact PII at the source by pairing ADK `before_agent_callback` and `before_model_callback` hooks with **Model Armor** and **Sensitive Data Protection (SDP)**. Using Model Armor's **Advanced Sensitive Data Protection** configuration, every user prompt is inspected and de-identified on the regional Model Armor endpoint before Gemini sees it:

![Model Armor and Sensitive Data Protection Prompt Redaction Flow](/s03/s3-day11-model-armor-sdp.png)

- **Advanced SDP Inspection & De-identification**: Linking only an **Inspection template** reports filter matches when sensitive `infoTypes` (`EMAIL_ADDRESS`, `PHONE_NUMBER`, `US_SOCIAL_SECURITY_NUMBER`, `PERSON_NAME`) are detected, whereas pairing it with a **De-identification template** replaces matched values with infoType placeholders such as `[EMAIL_ADDRESS]` and returns the sanitized string.
- **Pre-Execution Callback Scrubbing**: The `before_agent_callback` calls `sanitize_user_prompt` once per turn and ends the turn if Model Armor flags prompt injection. The `before_model_callback` then swaps every user message in the `LlmRequest` for its de-identified text, so Gemini, and the SQL it writes for the read-only BigQuery tools, never see the raw values.

**Running This Kata:**

1. **Provision Sensitive Data Protection & Model Armor Templates**: Enable the DLP, Model Armor, BigQuery, and Vertex AI APIs, then run `python setup_model_armor_dlp.py --project YOUR_PROJECT_ID --location us-central1` to create the regional inspection and de-identification templates, link them to a Model Armor template, and load a sample employee table in BigQuery.
2. **Run the Scrubbed HR Analytics Agent**: Follow the setup instructions at the top of the agent script, launch `adk web`, and send a prompt containing a name, email address, or SSN. Ask the agent to repeat your message: verify it only echos the redacted placeholders.

## Code & Commands

### Step 1: Provision Sensitive Data Protection & Model Armor Templates

```python
"""Step 1: Create the Sensitive Data Protection (DLP) templates, the Model Armor
template that uses them, and a small BigQuery table for the agent to query.
Do this first:
  1. gcloud auth application-default login
     gcloud config set project YOUR_PROJECT_ID
  2. gcloud services enable dlp.googleapis.com modelarmor.googleapis.com bigquery.googleapis.com aiplatform.googleapis.com
  3. pip install google-adk google-cloud-bigquery google-cloud-dlp google-cloud-modelarmor
Then run:
  python setup_model_armor_dlp.py --project YOUR_PROJECT_ID --location us-central1
