# 🔍 Day 24: Agent Anomaly Detection: Catch Agents Going Off-Script

> **Season 3 — October 2026 (Autumn / Halloween Edition)** · [Interactive Web View](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/24?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day24) · [Raw Markdown](https://adventofagents.com/2026/10/24.md?utm_source=adventofagents&utm_medium=markdown&utm_campaign=adventofagents_s3_2026&utm_content=day24)

**Summary:** Catch off-scope agent sessions with Agent Anomaly Detection (Private Preview).

**Day 24 of Google's Advent of Agents — Season 3**

Day 23 mapped what an agent is connected to. Today's question is what it actually did with that access. A support agent looks up a customer's orders, then the customer asks for the payroll table, and the agent's `fetch_records` tool, which accepts any table name, returns it. No tool failed and no error was logged, so error-rate and uptime dashboards stay green, and every step was something the agent was allowed to do.

**How It Works**

**Agent Anomaly Detection** on the Gemini platform reads the OpenTelemetry traces and logs your agents already emit and flags sessions where an agent acted outside its intended purpose. Analysis runs out of band in layers: lightweight models scan every session, an LLM reasons over the outliers, and a deeper pass inspects individual tool calls, so the agent itself sees no added latency. It works on agents deployed to Agent Runtime with ADK 1.2 or later, and it's in Private Preview for approved projects.

![An agent's telemetry flows to Agent Anomaly Detection, which flags an off-scope session and publishes the finding to the console and Security Command Center](/s03/s3-day24-aad-how-it-works.png)

- **Monitored vs. enabled agents**: Eligible agents are discovered automatically at no cost, and auto-enrollment can enable new agents as they appear. Analysis runs only on enabled agents, and only on sessions after that point.
- **Findings you can act on**: Each finding names a category such as Tool misuse (OWASP ASI02), with a severity, a probability, a plain-language explanation, and recommended fixes.
- **Alerts in Cloud Monitoring and Security Command Center**: Every detection increments the `detected_event_count` metric, so you can alert on Critical findings, and each flagged session is published to SCC as an `AGENT_SESSION_ANOMALY` finding for triage alongside your other findings.

### Deploy the refund agent with an over-privileged tool

```python
The fetch_records tool deliberately accepts any table name. Don't copy it into
production -- it exists so there is something for detection to find. All data
is canned and in memory, so nothing real is read or refunded.
